Puccini did not have much sympathy for the indifference of the public's reception for `Sister Angelica` when it premiered in 1918. “I just want people to cry. That's all” he said. Since then, the one-act opera, one of the rarest operas written exclusively for female soloists, has been embraced as a true operatic classic. This year Copenhagen Opera Festival presents its own production, inspired by the power of light. In the production, Puccini's heartbreaking portrait of a woman is transformed into a psychological thriller, where the protagonist bravely questions society's rules and takes control of her own life.
Soprano Yana Kleyn, Opera Talent of the Year 2022, will be performing the title role of Sister Angelica, who has been forced into a convent after giving birth to an illegitimate child receiving tragic news about her son, seven years later. The production also features award-winning Frederikke Kampmann and the British mezzo-soprano Sarah Pring, who also took part in the first two Operas of Il Trittico, "Gianni Schicchi" and "Il Tabarro" in 2021 and 2022 respectively.
