For two decades, Jens Søndergaard has lit up the Danish opera scene with his unrivalled talent and generosity. It is a great pleasure for Copenhagen Opera Festival to welcome the award-winning baritone as Guest Artist of the Year.
Humility and a heart that beats for the local community have made 47-year-old Jens Søndergaard one of the greatest opera singers of his generation in Denmark. When he joins this summer's programme as Guest Artist of the Year, it's with both iconic roles and plenty of teaching experience within singing on his CV.
With his rich and seductive voice, Jens Søndergaard has made a career in prominent productions across the country and as a concert singer with the largest orchestras. He has also paid visits to opera houses around Europe. Since 2020, the Guest Artist of the Year has been a permanent member of the soloist ensemble at the Royal Theatre and has interpreted Scarpia in 'Tosca', Marcello in 'La Bohème' and the demanding dream roles of Wotan, the Wanderer and Gunther in various stagings of Wagner's 'Ring of the Nibelung'. Since 2012, Søndergaard has worked as a singing teacher at MGK and the Opera Academy while also tending to his other activities.
At Copenhagen Opera Festival 2024, you can experience Jens Søndergaard in an intimate recital in Moltkes Palæ and as a mentor for six young talents in a Vocal Masterclass. Festival Director Amy Lane states the following about Guest Artist of the Year:
"I am so looking forward to watching Jens lead our Vocal Masterclasses and to see him inspiring our chosen Artists and exploring and delving into the realms of their chosen repertoire. Jens is one of the most accomplished and charismatic all-round performers that I have had the pleasure both to work with and to watch on many different stages. I am delighted that he has agreed to be our Guest Artist in Residence 2024 and look forward to welcoming him back to the Copenhagen Opera Festival."
