Copenhagen Opera Festival received the 'Best Future Project' award on Friday evening at the international opera award ceremony OPER! AWARDS 2025 at La Monnaie/De Munt, Brussels. The festival is particularly praised for "its courage to experiment with new compositions, formats, and narratives."
The prestigious German opera magazine OPER! organizes the award ceremony, which annually celebrates and honors exceptional achievements on the international opera scene across 20 different categories, including 'Best New Production', 'Best Opera Company', and, of course, 'Best (Female/Male) Singer'.
The 'Best Future Project' award is a new addition to the OPER! AWARDS categories and was first presented in 2024 to the La Monnaie/De Munt opera house's 'Green Opera' project for its significant efforts in sustainability initiatives.
This year, Copenhagen Opera Festival receives the award for its work in developing the opera genre through new works, unconventional formats, and a focus on engaging new audiences. The opera festival initiates and produces its own projects every year while also serving as a platform for and co-producing innovative works from independent companies. This has created particularly favorable conditions for reaching new audiences who might otherwise have limited exposure to opera as a genre. The OPER! AWARDS jury comments on the award:
"How do you make opera fit for the future? For example, by picking relevant topics that artists then shape into exciting music theatre. New pieces often fail because of their form, whether full-length large-scale productions or small performances. But there is another way: when courage for new compositions, formats and narratives is coupled with proficiency. When political relevance is matched with convincing aesthetic solutions. The result will be the attraction of alert, young audiences that many other festivals and theatres can only dream of. Take a leaf out of the book of our BEST FUTURE PROJECT: Copenhagen Opera Festival.”
Regarding the award presentation, Amy Lane, Artistic Director of Copenhagen Opera Festival, states:
"We are absolutely over the moon to have received this prize, and would like to share it with all those who have contributed to the festival over the past years: artists, creatives, technical and administration staff, volunteers, our audience and of course, our sponsors and supporters, without whom, the festival wouldn't exist. We have so much to look forward to in our future planning, and this award energizes even further our desire to continue the celebration and re-investigation of our wonderful artform, working both nationally and internationally, discovering and supporting the next generation of talents as we go!"
In the coming years, Copenhagen Opera Festival will continue its work with groundbreaking opera, including new commissions and collaborations. The festival is looking forward to the 2025 edition, which will take place between August 15 and 24. Among many other highlights, this year will feature 7 new performances, including 'Ringen', a condensed version of Richard Wagner's 'The Ring of the Nibelung' for children and their families.
OPER! AWARDS is one of the largest awards ceremonies in the European opera world, publicly recognizing international awardees. Other recipients this year include Salzburger Festspiele (Best Production), Maayan Licht (Best Newcomer), Corinne Winters (Best Female Singer), and Klaus Florian Vogt (Best Male Singer).
This year, La Monnaie/De Munt is hosting the sparkling award show. The festive gala ceremony takes place annually at the opera house that has received the 'Best Opera House' award, and this year, this honor goes to the historic Belgian opera house.
Copenhagen Opera Festival 2025 is supported by:
