Director Kasper Holten, librettist Kerstin Perski and composer Daníel Bjarnason's interpretation of Susanne Bier and Anders Thomas Jensen's feature film was a great success at its world premiere at the Danish National Opera in 2017. In their hands, the fateful story became an extremely dramatic opera with a star-studded cast of soloists and musicians. Bjarnason's riveting score was described by Fyns Stiftstidende as "astonishingly strong and expressive", and the production won a Reumert for Opera of the Year in 2018.
'Brothers' now moves into the raw and extremely atmospheric setting of Tunnelfabrikken, a gigantic former industrial hall in Nordhavn. Here the story of the soldier, Michael, who returns home from the war in Afghanistan with an unbearable secret, will unfold with intensity and painful scrutiny.
Produced in collaboration with the Icelandic Opera and Malmö Opera, the beautiful music will be performed by the Malmö Opera Orchestra alongside the chorus of the Icelandic Opera and international soloists all led by the Italian conductor, Andrea Molino.
Icelandic Daníel Bjarnason is Copenhagen Opera Festival's Guest Artist in Residence. You will therefore be able to see him in an artist talk on friday at Tunnelfabrikken with director Kasper Holten and set- and costume designer Steffen Aarfing among others, and in a talk with composer Louise Alenius in relation to a Composition Master Class.
This teaser is from the worldpremiere of the opera 'Brødre' in 2017, then it was performed by Den Jyske Opera as part of Musikhuset Aarhus' Bier Trilogi. The video is recorded and edited by: Klavs Kehlet Hansen
