Just like last year, we have a wonderfully wide-ranging and diverse programme. Whether you are an opera connoisseur, a beginner or are just curious about the art form, you can pass by Den Røde Plads from the 19th to the 23rd of August for an experience out of the ordinary. All of our events on the Festival Stage are free.
Folk festivals and world-class superstars
Our Festival Stage hosts will guide you through a varied programme ranging from ‘opera ear-catchers’ at the Festival Stage Opening Concert to an innovative and urban production of Puccini’s Il Tabarro.
Den Røde Plads will be turned into a touching music community when Middle East Peace Ensemble invites everyone to a cross-cultural folk festival with the Swedish-Turkish-Hungarian mezzo-soprano Idil Alpsoy at the forefront. Goldschmidt’s Musikakademi also offers diverse fireworks of musical joy, friendship and tolerance for people of all ages.
It will be a star-studded week where we are also proud to present our Guest Artist of the Year - the Scottish tenor Nicky Spence - with the Vocal Masterclass singers. You can also experience the impressive Malmö Opera Orchestra in Malmö Opera’s concert with highlights of the classic teenage tragedy Roméo et Juliette. Tenor Rickard Söderberg will guide us through the story.
Morning song and party bus
Our Festival Stage offers not only famous arias from world-class opera superstars, but you can also let your own voice sound out loud, when we invite everyone along for our traditional “ morning song”.
Our hosts and guests will be ready at the red square on Saturday, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday morning so you can get your day off to a good start, by joining in with some of your favourite tunes. There will be folders with the songs provided for everyone and, like last year, the guests will choose the repertoire for the day.
If you are at the red square with your children or to grab an afternoon drink from the festival bar, you can also experience opera performed from the roof of a bus! The week will also include elements of surprise in the form of the Party Bus, which brings opera to the people wherever they are – including the red square.
Every performance at the Festival Stage is completely free and we look forward to experiencing lots of opera moments with you in August!
